Here I am enjoying the 4th of July weekend and all of a sudden we have fireworks in the Boston sports world. I feel like these things always come in bundles, but nonetheless we are saying goodbye to a couple good guys and hello to some new faces.
I think this wins the Jump the Gun Award for the summer of 2013. We haven’t even finished reminiscing about the glory days with Pierce, Garnett, Doc, etc. and then BOOM, new coach, new culture. The Celtics organization just telling everyone to stop talking about the 2008 championship and move on with this move. Danny Ainge realistically picked Stevens out of a hat. This signing just broke about 10 rules in the traditional hiring a new coach process, but honestly who’s counting. It is inevitable that Stevens and Rondo are going to get into a shakedown at some point and I wouldn’t be surprised if Ainge just cut Rondo loose after it.
Regardless, I like the move a lot. Celtics have nothing to lose right now so why not try this guy out for a spin. The guy has Theo Epstein, Billy Beane, Moneyball potential written all over him and I love it. The 2014 Celtics could be the team that reinvents basketball.
Tyler Seguin trade
I am sure there are mixed opinions on this trade, but I for one like it a lot. Seguin clearly doesn’t fit the Bruin mold the way Lucic, Chara, and barely breathing Patrice Bergeron do. No doubt the kid is one of the most talented players in the NHL with limitless potential, but he was at a dead end here in Beantown. Dump him now while you can still get some strong returns. Erikson will fill Horton’s role very nicely and the Bruins won’t lose a step.
And the Sox have the best record in baseball. What? Everyone can complain all they want about not knowing the players or saying the Sox stink or whatever it is, but this has to be the sneakiest best team in the history of ever. When things like this are happening at Fenway everyone is happy:
